IAUE expels final-year student over viral video claiming lecturer wrote her project

The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has expelled a final-year student of the Department of English Language and Literary Studies, Onyewuenyi Chiamaka Nora, over a viral video in which she claimed that a lecturer was handling her final-year research project for ₦150,000.

The university announced the expulsion during its Senate meeting held on Wednesday at the Postgraduate Hall, according to a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu.

The statement said the decision followed an interview Nora granted to a content creator, which subsequently went viral on social media.

In the video, the student reportedly claimed that her lecturer was writing her final-year project and had charged her ₦150,000 for the job.

However, the university challenged her claims, stating that she identified her project topic as “Citizenship”, which it said was not a recognised topic in the Department of English and Literary Studies.

The statement added that the Senate considered the content damaging to the institution and decided to expel her as a deterrent to other students.

It read, “Senate has expelled Miss Onyewuenyi Chiamaka Nora with Matriculation Number U/2022/19900, a final-year student of the Department of English and Literary Studies, over damaging content creation. The expulsion is to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to do the same.

“Recall that the said student had, in an interview that went viral, claimed that her project topic was ‘Citizenship’ when there is no such topic as Citizenship in the Department. She also claimed that her supervisor was the one who wrote the project for her.”

Meanwhile, the university announced that it had been ranked seventh among institutions in the 2026 ranking of universities based on staff Google Scholar Profile submissions.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Okechuku Onuchuku disclosed the development during the Senate meeting, with the university commending academic staff whose articles and publications contributed to its visibility on Google Scholar.

The institution also urged its staff to sustain their efforts towards improving its academic profile and research visibility.
